There have been two games that have kept me looking forward to #ScreenshotSaturday every week, and one of them releases in less than a month! Baba Is You is a game that challenges players to think outside the box and change the rules to complete over 200 puzzles. Can’t get through that wall? Just disconnect “stop” from “wall is stop” and presto, you can walk right through it!
Baba Is You is a puzzle game where the rules you have to follow are present as blocks you can interact with. By manipulating them, you can change how the game works, repurpose things you find in the levels and cause surprising interactions!
Today, the trailer above released along with the news that the game will be releasing on March 13th for Nintendo Switch, as well as Windows, Mac, and Linux via itch.io, Steam, and the Humble Store. But what really caught my attention were the IGF and Nordic Game Jam wins. For those not familiar, game jams like the Nordic Game Jam challenge developers to create an entire game in a short amount of time (48 hours for the Nordic Game Jam). These events are often a hotbed of creativity with so many people focused on creating their very best, often without much sleep and without any pressure for creating something that can be sold.
Baba Is You is definitely a terrific example of a game that was born from one of these events and turned into a full-fledged release, and I couldn’t be happier for it! With over 200 levels promised, I’m really intrigued by what kinds of challenges Arvi Teikari has in store for players next month.
Meanwhile, I just discovered that there’s also a Jam Build of Baba Is You on itch.io available right now, so I’m going to dive into that to try to hold me over until next month!
