Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy is an upcoming indie RPG developed by Super Walrus Games and based on the Kaiju Big Battel wrestling group, which mixes wrestling with Japanese monster movies and features people wrestling in monster costumes, similar to the older films of the genre.
In Fighto Fantasy, you control a party of various kaiju, starting with the tokusatsu hero inspired character, American Beetle. As it turns out, the nefarious Dr. Cube has been recruiting evil kaiju to assist him in world domination by causing distortions in the space time continuum. It’s up to American Beetle and his allies to travel through time and put a stop to Dr. Cube’s evil plans once and for all.
Fighto Fantasy plays like a traditional turn based RPG, with each party character having different strengths — brawler, magic user, healer, etc. — and plenty of special abilities. Instead of having the typical elemental spells however, each characters special abilities are classified as something different and each technique has a unique name. For example, American Beetles special techniques are under “Pugilist” and consist of different types of powerful punches, while ally Silver Potato’s techniques are known as “Food Fury” and consists of different cooking based attacks such as boil and microwave. Additionally, party members also have special abilities to use outside of battle to get past obstacles in the overworld. Fighto Fantasy also features no random encounters, and enemies must make contact with the party on the overworld map to start a battle.
Fighto Fantasy might not offer anything new in terms of gameplay mechanics, but still provides a humorous and uniquely themed RPG that goes back to basics. I surprisingly hadn’t even heard about this game until recently, but now I’m beyond excited to see what the full version has to offer. It’s simple enough to not overwhelm players new to the genre as well as a great addition to the line up of retro inspired RPGs for those who yearn for the days of the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. Check out the trailer below to see the game in action.
Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy is set to launch on Steam later this year. A demo of the game is currently available for download.
