At the 20th annual Independent Games Festival Awards during GDC, a great deal of indie games from the past year were nominated, and quite a few notable games were chosen as the best among their peers throughout various categories. Here is the full list of winners:
Best Student Game: Baba is You
Excellence in Visual Art: Chuchel
Excellence in Audio: Urnogg Unlimited
Alt.Ctrl.GDC Award: Puppet Pandemonium
Excellence in Design: Baba is You
Nuovo Award:Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy
Excellence in Narrative: Night in the Woods
ID@Xbox Gaming for Everyone Award: Special Effect
Audience Award: Celeste
Seumas McNally Grand Prize: Night in the Woods
While it was disappointing to not see Into the Breach — my personal pick for Excellence in Design — not receive an award, and surprising to not see Cuphead win the awards for Excellence in Visual Art and Excellence in Audio, it was great to see just how much positive reception the audience gave to all the nominees and winners. Night in the Woods is well deserving of the Excellence in Narrative award and Grand Prize, and Baba is You seems to be a real breakout hit having won two of the four awards it was nominated for.
Congratulations to all the winners and nominees, and make sure to keep reminding everyone what makes indie games great. All nominated are playable at the IGF Pavilion at GDC.
