Play NYC is less than a week away! As part of our media partnership with Playcrafting, we’ve be highlighting a ton of different indie games, from different genres and backgrounds, in a series we’ve called “The Road to Play NYC“. Each day this week, we’ll try to squeeze in highlights of a few more games you can expect to see this weekend at Play NYC.
Today I wanted to focus on some of varied the RPG’s that’ll be on show at Play NYC! Granted, the “RPG” label is a pretty broad one, so be prepared for variety!
Battle of the Boros – Andrew Heymann
Battle of the Boros is a team-based RPG set during a mysterious invasion and occupation of New York City. The game is currently in-development for PC.
NYC is a fantastic setting for any RPG if you ask me, and while it might be cliche for the Big Apple to once again be the site of a mysterious invasion, I’m not sure that makes it any less compelling. Even from the early footage available, you can see Battle of the Boros taking advantage of this, offering up a host of diverse environments to fight your way through and explore.
I also happen to love team-based RPG’s. The concept of assembling your own cadre of companions and journeying through adveristy together is fantastic, and ripe for not only narrative, but individual stories about how your version of this team triumphed or sturggled.
An RPG deck building game with roguelike elements. The dead arise and only you can stand against them. Travel the lands to slay monsters, acquire new cards, survive harrowing encounters and claim powerful equipment to enhance your deck. A final showdown with The Lost awaits you at…The Last Hex!
The Last Hex is probably one of the games I’m most interested in this years Play NYC line up, simply because it’s combining so many different gameplay genres. One part RPG, One Part Roguelike, One Part Deck Building, The Last Hex seems like it might be trying to juggle way too many parts, but from the gameplay I’ve seen, it actually seems to have stumbled on to a pretty fantastic formula.
Now that I think about it, deck building actually meshes really nicely into the idea of building a character in an RPG. Sure, you’re swapping cards for stats, interrupts for feats, and summons for skills, but nevertheless, you, the player, are still in control of creating an avatar fairly unique to your playthrough.
Hero Soul – Ryan Su
Hero Soul is a 2D top-down pixel ARPG with rogue-lite elements, which includes procedural generated levels, deck building and tradiational JRPG elements. My goal is to create a cohesive RPG experience, while adding elements of uncertainty and replay-ability.
It wouldn’t be a valid discussion of RPGs with out bringing up JRPGs. Hero Soul looks to be relishing in the tradition of JRPs, from character design to pixel art to combat mechanics. Combat is in real time though, as opposed to the cornerstone that is turn-based combat in JRPGs, and there’s clearly an emphasis on fast-paced, “easy to learn, but hard to master” action. On top of this, the Arcana system brings in some deck building (hello again!) and resource management to combat.
The fact that all of Hero Soul‘s levels will be procedural generated means there is a huge amount of replayability, as every time you enter a dungeon the map layout, enemies, and special rooms will be something quite different form what you’ve experienced before.
