With 16 days to go, Sunless Sea, a 2D Steampunk-Naval Exploration Game from Failbetter Games, is nearly at its goal of £60,000. At the time of writing, the Kickstarter has managed to raise £53,795.Sunless Seas may be a new game, but it is working with a pre-established back-story and universe; Failbetter is using the Gothic, subterranean Victorian setting they created with Fallen London, already well known through the browser based game of the same name. Fallen London is a dark, foreboding world full of mysterious characters, odd choices, and more then one turn you’d never be expecting. The Sunless Sea synopsis gives you a good indication of what you might expect:
“Thirty years ago, London was stolen. Now it rests on the shore of the Unterzee, that old dark ocean under the world. Hell is close, immortality is cheap, and the screaming has largely stopped. Steamships ply all the wild black zee, between the Iron Republic and the Elder Continent, between Hunter’s Keep and the Travertine Spiral and the Dawn Machine. Welcome. Delicious friend.”
Sunless Sea is expected to reach Beta in March of 2014. Contributors who donate more than £20 will have access to this Beta. Sunless Sea is also has two stretch goals: Beneath the Sunless Sea at £95,000 would add submarines to the game, and the Castles in the Roof stretch goal would add Dirigibles should the Kickstarter reach £125,000.
