Bishop Meyers (Vacant Sky Awakening) has an excellent post on how to work with Programmers (aka: Engineers) during games creation. From understanding what they really do to not wasting their time, it’s filled with helpful tips for those new to the industry or perhaps are wondering why they’re never invited out for lunch.
Don’t assume that a minor change to the game design will also be a minor change to the code. If you’re thinking about making a change, consult your engineer about what it will entail. Get their advice on how much work it will be. Have a conversation about whether or not the change is worth the time and effort it will take.
