At last night’s Game Awards, Hello Games revealed something I’m rather excited about. It was a trailer for a game called The Last Campfire. the visuals are gorgeous, full of life and color, and the music used set a fantastic, slightly creepy tone:
The Last Campfire is an adventure, a story of a lost ember trapped in a puzzling place, searching for meaning and a way home. Travel deeper into the lands beyond the dark forest and overcome the adversities before you.Discover beautiful wilderness filled with lost folk, strange creatures and mysterious ruins. Find hope and carry it with you on your Journey to light The Last Campfire.
However, more than anything, I love the fact that this game is setting a precedent for Hello Games making shorts. Regardless of your feelings on No Man’s Sky, it’s easy to say with certainty that it is NOT a short experience. There’s grinding, harvesting, travel and exploration, all taking up time. Short video games might be easier for people to enjoy fully. It also lets Hello Games experiment with the visual, artistic and mechanical direction of games which could lead to some amazing inventions.
