In a press release distributed yesterday, Nexon has announced a new project “based on the award-winning series Ghost in the Shell: STAND ALONE COMPLEX, Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG, and Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society.” This game will be an MMOFPS, though we know  very few details beyond that at this point, other than its anticipated release in the first quarter of 2014.

As a massive Ghost in the Shell: SAC fan, I’m more than a little excited, but certainly skeptical. Ghost in the Shell is one of the most critically acclaimed Anime (and manga)  ever created, and has a huge following. The setting is RIPE for a video game of some description, and I’d even argue that a well done FPS could indeed capture the feeling of the universe. A lot of my concern comes from the idea of this being an MMO, not just a multi-player game (which would work perfectly with each player playing a member of Section 9). However, we do know players will be able to play as Section 9 agents or as Cyber terrorists.. I just want to see the game developers take the story into account in some way, and not turn GitS: The MMO into a stock-standard shooter. Part of what made GitS such a great series was the depth it had hidden inside of it, getting downright philosophical at times. It’d be a shame to pass that buy in an action game.

Oh, who am I kidding, I’m excited. It’s going to be a long wait till 2014…

Have your say!
